St Helens College is governed by the Corporation Board, a group of individuals who represent the interests of the College and also the communities we serve. The Board of Governors meets regularly to provide the College with direction and advice, to set policy objectives and to ensure that the College is fulfilling its mission and upholding its values. Roy Clarke Elaine Brocklehurst

Roy Clarke


Roy was formerly a General Manager of Pilkington UK Ltd and is now a self-employed consultant and a part-time Ofsted inspector. Roy has been a Member of the Board since pre-incorporation and was appointed originally as Chair of the Corporation in September 2001. He has been re-appointed on an annual basis since this time.

Roy is also a Member and Chair of the Resources Committee, a Member of the Remuneration Committee, Chair of the Search and Governance Committee and also the strategic link Governor with Contracts and Data Analysis.

Elaine Brocklehurst


Elaine joined the Corporation in January 1998 and has retired as a manager at Knauf Insulation Ltd in St Helens. Elaine is the Deputy Chair of the Corporation, a Member of the Corporation's Resources, Gamble Education Charity Trust and Search and Governance Committees, the strategic link Governor with Standards & Performance and Chair of both the Remuneration Committee and the Standards and Curriculum Committee.

Jette Burford


Jette Burford was appointed Principal of the College in January 2012 and she is also a Member of the Corporation and a Member of the majority of Corporation Standing Committees (apart from the Remuneration and Audit Committees).
 

Diane Charnock


Diane Charnock was appointed to the Corporation in March 2010 and is a senior consultant working primarily with the National Health Service. Diane is a member of the Standards and Curriculum Committee and is also one of the strategic Governor links with one of the Vice Principals (HE & FE).

Susan Jee Andy Bowden

Susan Jee


Susan Jee was appointed to the Corporation in March 2009 and has retired as the Group Finance Director at British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. Susan is a Member of the Resources Committee, Member of the Standards and Curriculum Committee and is also the strategic Governor link with Finance (including HR).

Councillor Andy Bowden


Cllr Andy Bowden was appointed by the Corporation in July 2016. Andy is the Deputy Leader, Cabinet Member - Children, Families and Young People and Education at St Helens Council and is also a Ward Councillor for Parr.

Nick Shore is the Head of Engineering for NSG, the Japanese company that acquired Pilkingtons in 2006 and was appointed as a new External Member of the Board in January 2013. Nick is one of the Strategic Governor links with one of the Vice Principals (HE & FE), a Member of the Audit Committee and a member of the Search and Governance Committee.

Nick Hall


Nick Hall was appointed to the Board in May 2005. Nick is a Solicitor/Managing Partner with J Keith Parks and Co, a firm of solicitors in St Helens. Nick is also a Member of the Resources Committee and is the strategic link with the Principal in relation to Planning. He is linked with the Deputy Principal for Health and Safety. Nick is also the lead Governor for Safeguarding.

Alexis Mason was appointed to the Corporation in September 2013. Recently retired, Alexis was the Dean of the International Office and Executive Director of Commercial Development at the University of Chester.

Julie Heap


Julie Heap is the elected staff governor and was appointed to the Corporation in July 2014. Julie is the Head of the Department for Hairdressing, Beauty and Retail at the College.

John Middlehurst Kyle Onza

John Middlehurst


John Middlehurst was appointed as a Member of the Corporation in January 2007. John is the retired Chief Executive of Waterside Training Ltd, and now runs his own property maintenance and consultancy firm. John is also the Chair of Audit Committee and a Member of Standards and Curriculum Committee. John is one of the strategic Governor links with Business Development.

Kyle Onza is the elected Student Council President and is one of the two student Governors. Kyle is currently studying on the Diploma for Entry to the Public Services programme

Phil Round joined the Corporation in January 2003 and has retired as the Education and Training Manager at Jaguar Cars in Halewood. Phil is Deputy Chair of the Resources Committee, a Member of the Standards and Curriculum Committee and is also one of the the strategic Governor links with one of the Vice Principals (HE & FE)

Keith Sanderson Chris Jones

Keith Sanderson


Keith Sanderson is the owner of Xigo Nanotools Ltd which provides consultancy services for particle characterisation and nano technology solutions in the UK and abroad. Keith is also a magistrate sitting on the St Helens Adult and Liverpool Family panels and was appointed to the Corporation in January 2013. Keith is one of the Strategic Governor links with Business Development.

Chris Jones was appointed as Clerk to the Corporation in September 1997.

Governor Allowances and Expenses

Board Members are not paid for carrying out their duties. Board Members may claim expenses for travelling and subsistence associated with attendance at meetings, development events and conferences.
