Access to Higher Education courses are for adults who are aiming for Higher Education, but who may not possess the necessary entry qualifications or may not have studied for some time. The programme is designed to qualify you for entry to Higher Education and/or prepare you for that level of study. It leads to a nationally recognised Access Diploma. Credits obtained on the programme are accepted by any University in the country. We enjoy close links with Universities in the area and the reputation of the programme is very high.
The following Access to HE Pathways are available:-
Access to HE Diploma in:
Teaching
Humanities
Social Work
Social Science
Nursing and Midwifery
Biological & Health Sciences
Each pathway comprises a range of interesting subjects. Individual subject information sheets are available from Student Services.
For those who are unavailable to attend during the day due to work commitments, all routes except Biological & Health Sciences are currently available part time (based on one evening per week and an additional 10-12 hours self-directed study).
For the day time Access courses, all applicants for the Teaching, Humanities, Social Work, Social Science pathways should possess a minimum of 4 GCSEs (Grade C and above) or equivalent, including English (at Grade B or above) and Maths, as well as Science for those intending to pursue a career in the Primary School sector and Nursing/Midwifery (please discuss with advising tutor). Please note: For some HE courses there may be specific requirements in addition to the Access Diploma.
For the part time Access courses, all applicants for the Teaching, Humanities, Social Work, Social Science and Nursing and Midwifery pathways should possess a minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grade C and above), including English (at Grade B or above) and Maths, as well as Science for those intending to pursue a career in the Primary School sector and Nursing/Midwifery (please discuss with advising tutor). Whilst there may be some discretion with regards to equivalent qualifications, the Programme Team will make a decision based on the overall quality of the application and related relevant experience. For those wanting a career in teaching, social work, nursing or midwifery, we strongly recommend that you seek to undertake some paid or voluntary work in a relevant area which will further enhance your application, as universities only accept students who have this experience.
Please note: For some HE courses there may be specific requirements in addition to the Access Diploma. Applicants are advised to keep abreast of entry requirements of the Universities they may be interested in applying to.
For entry to the Biological & Health Sciences route, there is an expectancy that you will have 4 GCSE's at grade C or above (including a science - preferably Human Biology or similar). There may be some flexibilty however, and each application is considered on its own merit. A BTEC First Diploma or an Access to Further Education qualification is also acceptable if science was studied & achieved. Applicants without a science background, but with at least 5 GCSE's of C Grade or above may be considered.
The first stage of the selection process for entry to the Access to HE programme is the application form. Decisions as to whether you will be invited to the next stage of selection will be based on the quality of this application. You may then be invited to a diagnostic assessment and pre-enrolment interview to assess suitability for the course. For further details ring 01744 623253 or e-mail

MATHS AND ENGLISH WORKSHOPS
If you enter the Access programme without existing qualifications in either Maths or English, we would advise you to arrange an informal interview with a Workshop Tutor who will assess your level and identify the areas in which you need some assistance. Sessions can often be fitted around your timetable. You'll work at your own level and pace with the help of very experienced tutors. You can make an appointment to see a Tutor via Student Services.
