IT for Free

For a limited period, St Helens College are holding Free IT courses to help people build their knowledge and skills so they can make the most out of using a computer whether at home or in the workplace.

The courses offer the opportunity for people to gain a nationally recognised qualification flexibly at their own pace, fully supported and guided by friendly helpful tutors.

Level 1

The level 1 course is perfect for helping you to improve your ability across a range of IT applications. It will help you to learn new computer skills and gain a valuable, recognised qualification.

It's perfect for both absolute beginners who just want to broaden their knowledge or, those who want to build upon existing skills to gain a practical qualification that is attractive to employers. It also provides a thorough introduction for those wishing to go onto more advanced studies and a higher level qualification.

Learning takes place at your own pace so regardless at how quickly you learn, you will feel comfortable. On this course you are fully supported and guided by friendly, helpful tutors.

By completing this course you will have achieved a nationally recognised level 1 qualification in IT.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course has flexible start dates. You can choose to study flexibly around your commitments and at your own pace. Study can be during the day or on an evening.

Study times available are:

  • Mondays: 1.00pm - 4.00pm and 6.00pm - 9.00pm
  • Tuesdays: 9.00am - 12.00pm
  • Wednesdays: 9.00am - 12.00pm, 1.00pm - 4.00pm and 6.00pm - 9.00pm
  • Thursdays: 9.00am - 12.00pm and 1.00pm - 4.00pm

You are required to study for a minimum of two sessions a week in order to complete the qualification.

What will I study?

This qualification aims to develop your knowledge of standard IT hardware and develop your skills using Microsoft Office software. You will develop knowledge of different software applications and use them to complete tasks effectively.

For example:

  • Word Processing - how to format documents
  • Presentations - creating a presentation
  • Spreadsheets - how to use formulae
  • Database - how to create a database and use queries

How is it assessed?

The qualification will be achieved by completing an assignment at the end of each unit. You will be fully supported by the course tutor.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

No formal qualifications are required although some experience of a basic use of IT and using a computer would be an advantage.

A good level of English is desirable.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Successfully completing this course can open the door to a whole range of employment and career progression opportunities. This qualification is widely recognised by employers. You could choose to progress onto the level 2 course.
