Level 1 and 2 Pesticide Application - PA1 and PA6

This training and assessment course supports the information and knowledge required to achieve the Award in the Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides (PA1 and PA6).

The modules delivered place a strong emphasis on the safe use of pesticides, environmental factors, legislation and successful achievement of the assessment.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course takes place in January and February and consists of 2 days of training, with ½ day of testing. The course is held at our Sherdley Park Horticulture base, opposite Pets Corner.

What will I study?

For this award, you need to show you've got a strong set of pesticide application skills and knowledge. You will demonstrate your knowledge of the approved code of practice for plant protection products through an online, multiple-choice test.

You'll then show your practical skills through a demonstration. Your assessor will check that you have the background knowledge and understanding you need for your job through oral questioning.

You will cover:

  • Code of practice for plant protection products
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Interpreting product information
  • Mixing the correct quantity of pesticide
  • Safe application
  • Weather conditions.

How is it assessed?

For the core unit learners will be assessed using an online exam. For the optional unit, you'll assess learners through a practical demonstration and oral questioning.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

Typically you will have some knowledge and basic skills in pesticide application. You want to get recognition for your skills, likely to meet the legal requirements of the Control of Pesticides Regulations. You may also be looking to get continuing professional development (CPD) points towards NroSO.

What are the course fees?

The cost of the course is £399 and includes the necessary materials, equipment and examination fee. Both modules have an exam. If you fail either exam, you will need to pay an additional £92.00 per module to resit.
