The prevalence of diseases that are associated with physical inactivity and poor lifestyle behaviours, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, continue to be major concerns impacting upon the health of the nation. Our foundation degree in Exercise, Health and Fitness covers a diverse range of topics. It examines the effect of lifestyle choices on health and the psychological determinants that influence lifestyle choices and the strategies that can be used to shape positive behaviour change.

Essentially, the course will teach you how to effectively prescribe exercise to improve fitness and to manage and prevent disease. This will be done by experiential learning taking a very hands on approach to provide you the opportunity to develop your practical and employability skills set to enhance your career prospects.

There are a wide range of careers to choose from and studying the foundation degree in Exercise, Health and Fitness along with the right dedication, can lead to a fulfilling career in the sector.

Course in-depth

What will I study?

Year 1

During the first year you will gain an in-depth understanding of how the musculoskeletal system operates and interacts to enable you to analyse joint movement and muscle activation during exercise. You will develop consultation, practical and evaluative skills in order to effectively health screen and fitness test clients to inform subsequent exercise recommendations. Your knowledge and understanding of the key determinants of health at both an individual level and in the wider societal context will be explored. You will be equipped with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to investigate both the immediate and long-term adaptations of the body in response to different exercise stimuli.

You will be introduced to components and principles of exercise and fitness to show how regular exercise and physical activity can be used to improve health and specific fitness parameters. A strong practical focus develops the skills required to plan and deliver gym based exercise programmes. This enables you to plan progressive exercise and physical activity programmes. Your academic writing and research skills will also be enhanced to support and underpin the successful completion of modules in the second year.

Year 2

The second year aims to provide an understanding of the principles of nutrition so that you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct nutritional assessments in order to provide realistic, safe and practical nutritional recommendations for health and exercise. Your critical thinking skills will be developed enabling you to review common dietary practices and their efficacy and safety. The skills required to be a competent personal trainer will be developed with a very hands-on practical approach. You will investigate how to encourage positive behaviour change that can influence health outcomes.

Health perspectives and physical activity will be explored looking firstly at the epidemiology of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity whilst a secondary aspect will allow you to critically explore health initiatives at a local level which aim to improve community health. You also have the opportunity to develop a research proposal in the further research methods module. A compulsory part of study in year 2 is the completion of a work placement. Whilst on placement, students will gain valuable experiential learning to equip them with the relevant skills needed to secure employment in the health and fitness industry.

How will I study?

This foundation degree takes a hands-on-approach through theoretical and practical based sessions, workshops, group work and presentations. You will also benefit from visits and guest lecturers. The second year employability skills module will provide a professional setting in which you can apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired from the course.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include practical assessments, case studies, poster presentations, job application skills, mock interviews, work placements, reflective writing, personal development planning, exams, written assignments and a research seminar/conference presentation.

Who will be teaching me?

A highly qualified, enthusiastic and experienced team with a wide range of interests reflecting all areas of sport, exercise, health and fitness teach on this degree. Lecturers have industry experience in both the public and private sectors. In addition, visiting speakers assist in the delivery of the degree, often providing novel approaches to, or presenting unique aspects of, particular subjects.
