Congratulations to Michael Daley (pictured), a National Diploma in Construction Level 3 student from St Helens College’s Technology Centre, who has been accepted on to an exclusive BSc (Hons) Construction Management degree programme at Salford University, which only admits a class of hand-picked students each year.

“I got good grades at GCSE, but I didn’t want to do A levels, preferring something that was more career focused” said Michael. “My family are in construction, so I knew it was for me. I enjoy college; the tutors have a laid back approach and are supportive and keen to help. Also, as they have worked in the industry, they know what they are on about.”

Outdoor girl Liz Preston is achieving her lifetime ambition to work as a firefighter, thanks to her grit and determination and the skills and knowledge she acquired on the public service programme at St Helens College. In January this year she joined Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, and is now based at Moss Side Fire Station as a member of Red Watch.

” The inspiration to join Fire Service had always been there through my father, who is a working firefighter” said Liz. “I wanted a career that wasn't ‘9 to 5’, or based indoors, so I like the challenge of never having two same days at work. I love being part of a public service to help the community, especially such a diverse and challenging one like Moss Side, and enjoy working with such a good team.”

”I wouldn't choose any other course if I had to do college again. For the public service career path I was choosing it gave me a great starting toolbox of knowledge, with a good balance of theory and practical learning.”
