Colours Restaurant at St Helens College is the latest business to benefit from hiring apprentices.  The restaurant currently employs three young apprentices; Niall Corden, Gemma Faragher and Rachael Horrocks.

Niall, a former pupil at Cowley High School is currently studying on the Hospitality Supervision and Leadership Level 3 apprenticeship.  Niall successfully completed A-levels at his local sixth form college before enrolling on the apprenticeship programme at the College.  Niall is looking forward to completing his apprenticeship and has applied to study on an events management degree programme at a London university.

Niall says “The apprenticeship programme is a fantastic course and it provides us with the practical skills we require to gain employment within the industry.  We have the opportunity to develop our skills working in the restaurant where we work as part of the customer facing team.”

Rachael successfully completed A-levels and decided to enrol on the Hospitality Supervision and Leadership Level 3 apprenticeship at College.  Rachael, a former Up Holland High School student wants to develop a career in the industry and wanted a qualification where she could develop her practical skills in a real working environment.

Rachael adds “As a member of the front of house team, we have the responsibility of providing the highest standard of customer service and the experience prepares you for a career in the industry.”

Gemma is currently studying on the Food and Beverage Level 2 apprenticeship programme and would like to work in the hotel event management industry in the future.  Gemma, a former student at Bowring Community Sports College in Huyton, chose to study at St Helens College after hearing positive things about the Hospitality and Catering Department.

Gemma concludes “The apprenticeship programme is hard work but it is great fun.  We have to work 30 hours a week in Colours restaurant alongside our studies at College.  I chose to study at St Helens College because they have great tutors who are really good at explaining things and it’s easy to get to, it’s just a short bus ride from Huyton.”

You could follow in the footsteps of Niall, Gemma and Rachael as Colours Restaurant are looking for 16 apprentices to join the team in September.  For more information contact Terry Lavin on 01744 623141 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
