Formula for Success for Engineering Apprentices

E-mail Print
When Liverpool John Moores (LJMU) University required 3 young apprentices to join their team in the labs, Alex Fath and Keith Wright were the ideal candidates to fill two of the vacancies.  LJMU wanted to recruit apprentices in response to the lack of skills in the employment market and the apprenticeship programme would enable the university to train its new recruits to suit their exact needs.

Engineering-Apprentices-Keith-Wright-and-Alex-FathAlex and Keith currently study on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Mechanical Manufacture and attend St Helens College for one day a week and work in the labs at the university for four days a week.  They are currently studying in the third year of the four year apprenticeship programme.

Alex says “The apprenticeship programme allows us to develop our skills within a real working environment and will prepare us for a career in the industry.  We are currently studying on the HNC in Mechanical Engineering at St Helens College, allowing us to gain a higher education qualification.”

An apprenticeship has enabled Alex and Keith to earn whilst they learn new skills and follow a career path that they enjoy.  They have been given the opportunity to transfer their skills from College to the workplace.  The young apprentices have already completed an NVQ Level 2 in Mechanical Engineering and BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and they are currently studying on the HNC in Mechanical Engineering at St Helens College.

Keith and Alex have worked on a variety of projects at LJMU and are part of the LJMU Formula Student Racing Team.  They are part of a team that has designed and constructed a racing car that will compete in a class 1 competition at Silverstone, as well as competing at the Hockenheimring in Germany for the first time.

Keith concludes “There are many benefits of studying on an apprenticeship programme including valuable hands on experience.  LJMU are a great employer and we have been involved in loads of exciting projects.  Alex and I are proud to work at LJMU and the university staff are supportive and help us to develop in our roles. “
