An apprenticeship programme is the ideal way to develop new skills for your chosen career and it has been the ideal route for St Helens College student Jay Brereton. Jay has always been interested in joinery since woodwork class in school and decided to pursue this career choice by studying on a Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship programme at the College.
Jay, a former pupil at the Launchpad Centre is hard working and reliable and was highly recommended by his teacher for an apprenticeship vacancy with GM Property Renovations based in Wigan. Jay currently studies for one day a week in College and works for four days with his employer, where he helps to fit kitchens and bathrooms and develop his joinery skills.
Jay says “Being an apprentice means that I have the opportunity to develop my skills in a real working environment. I am learning everyday and I can carry out important work for my employer as well as learning new skills from him. The tutors at College are very good at explaining things and the skills that I learn are valuable to me and my employer.”
Jay, from Warrington, has successfully completed the first year of his two year apprenticeship and is working hard to complete the programme. Jay remembers how nervous he was on his first day of his apprenticeship but he now has alot more confidence.
Jay adds “I remember the first day of the apprenticeship and it was daunting as this was my first job, but my boss Greg was great and I soon settled in. I enjoy my work and I am glad that I chose an apprenticeship as I have learned so much and I am a more confident person.”
After completing the apprenticeship programme, Jay would like to progress onto the level 3 apprenticeship and would like to further develop his skills and knowledge.
