Shannon Turns Placement into an Apprenticeship

E-mail Print

Shannon Morris came to St Helens College to study at the Premier Academy on The Weeks Programme and didn't realise that it would be the stepping stone to a new career.

shannon-morrisThe Weeks Programme has been designed to provide young people aged 16-18 like Shannon with the opportunity to carry out a work placement in the community. It gives individuals the opportunity to gain work experience and explore potential career paths.

Students that take part in The Weeks Programme can choose a work placement in an area that interests them and for Shannon, childcare and working with children was an ideal option. Shannon, a former pupil at St Augustine's High School, worked with the programme team and organised a placement at Heirs and Graces Nursery in Dentons Green.

After a successful placement at the nursery, it was clear to see that Shannon had the right skills to work with children and the owners of the Nursery, Alan and Sue Dawes were delighted with Shannon's attitude to work and her caring nature towards the children and offered her an apprenticeship.

Shannon is currently studying on a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Childcare and attends College for one day every week to develop her skills, whilst working in the Nursery for four days a week.

Shannon says "When I started on The Weeks Programme, I never thought I would go on to become an apprentice. I enjoy working at the Nursery and studying an apprenticeship means that I am able to put the skills I learn at College into practice in a real working environment."
