You don’t have to be studying on a sports programme to get involved with sports at St Helens College!
All students are encouraged to join the College’s sports teams, no matter what their level of ability. The College teams compete locally, regionally and nationally against other colleges and universities in sports such as men’s and women’s football, rugby league, basketball and netball. We also compete in the British College’s Sports Competitions in swimming, badminton, squash, women’s and men’s hockey, cross country, table tennis and golf.
The College’s fitness suite and sports hall contains a wide variety of up-to-date equipment for both teaching and commercial use. Fitness testing facilities are available, alongside a good range of cardiovascular machines, resistance machines and free weights. A Sports Therapy clinic is housed at the brand new Town Centre Campus, where teaching takes place, and clients can book appointments to use the sports massage/sports injuries services available. Bobbies Lane is the location for our outdoor sports pitches, which play host to practical sports lessons and training matches for the Sports Academies. Students are able to join the College gym, hire out the sports hall and use the sports therapy facilities, all at discounted rates.
The Sports Academies
The Sports Academies aim to provide young, keen players with top quality coaching to develop and improve their skills. Both football (men and women) and rugby are available.
The Sports Academies continue to enjoy achievement and success. The Rugby League Team secured a fantastic victory in the 2009 Carnegie Champion College Cup Final, beating St Wilfrid’s College 28-18 at Wakefield Wildcats Belle Vue Stadium. This is the fifth year running we have picked up this particular trophy!

I enjoy the training and playing matches on a Wednesday afternoon. In the future I hope to play professionally, or work in Sports Development.”
