LEVEL 3 BTEC DIPLOMAS IN ART AND DESIGN
This is a one OR two year art and design programme. It takes two years to achieve the Diploma (equivalent to two A levels) or Extended Diploma (equivalent to three A levels). Those leaving after one year will achieve a Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to one A level.)
This is a general vocational art and design course that will enable you to try many specialisms within this area and then develop your skills. The course will also help identify which area you would like to pursue as a career. The subjects taught include fine art (drawing, painting and printmaking), 3D design (wood, metals, ceramics and glass), fashion and textiles, photography, graphic design and associated computer software.
The programme is for school leavers looking to pursue a career in art and design. It is ideal for those who want to experience a broad range of areas before specialising at university, including young adults returning to education.
What will I learn?
There are four mandatory units at Subsidiary Diploma level:
Visual Recording in Art and Design
Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design
Communication Through Art and Design

You will complete a total of six units to achieve the Subsidiary Diploma which will take one year. Those who do well and wish to progress onto the second year will complete a further six units to achieve the Diploma, OR a further 12 to achieve the Extended Diploma.
The programme is practically based and develop your design skills and personal style, whilst enabling you to develop a portfolio of your work. The course also provides opportunities in career planning.
What are the entry requirements?
You must have achieved a minimum of four GCSE grades A-C, including one in an art and design related programme, plus English Language or Literature. Alternatively you must have a Level 2 Diploma in an art and design related subject, or an equivalent qualification and Level 2 Key Skills Communication.
How will I be assessed?
All units will be assessed according to awarding body criteria. You will work on a range of assignments and projects which will be awarded a grade. The tutors will also provide feedback and advise you how you may be able to improve your work in the future. You will achieve an overall grade and certificate for a pass, merit or distinction/* at the end of the course.
On successful completion of the Extended Diploma you can progress onto an appropriate Higher Education programme in your chosen specialisation or you could seek employment in the field.
