Level 2 and 3 Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy

Amy LeylandAfter successfully completing her apprenticeship in beauty therapy at both level 2 and 3, Amy is now working towards her teacher training PGCE with University Centre St Helens.

Amy first heard about St Helens College’s apprenticeship programmes when she secured a summer job with salon Expressions of Beauty, in Billinge. Amy was studying for her A levels at the time, but discovered that she loved the beauty industry and wanted to focus her studies in that direction.

Her employer recommended that Amy should contact St Helens College and apply for an apprenticeship. When she spoke to the College, their dedicated team of apprenticeship coordinators supported Amy and her employer to set up an apprenticeship programme within her existing workplace.

Amy, said, "When I was studying my A levels, I released that I wanted a more hands on approach to learning. An apprenticeship is really the best way to do that. I gained tonnes of relevant hands on work experience, which is crucial in the beauty industry."

As an apprentice, Amy worked for four days a week at Expressions of Beauty where she gained a vast amount of work experience and a great insight into the industry. For one day a week Amy attended St Helens College, where she completed the theoretical training needed to achieve her qualifications on completion of her apprenticeship.

Amy went onto say, "The College was really helpful during my time as an apprentice. I felt fully supported by my tutors, not only within the College but within the workplace. My tutors would offer advice and guidance on anything from workplace techniques, to applying for my degree.

"It was because of the enthusiasm of the teachers at the College, that I was inspired to go into teaching myself. So now I'm studying for my PGCE at University Centre St Helens as well as completing my placement within the College's Hair and Beauty Department.”

PGCE lecturer Sue Mather said, "Amy’s story shows that young people can have complete control over their own learning. Here at St Helens College we will listen to students and understand their individual goals. We will work with them to ensure they have the best chance of achieving those goals. There are a vast amount of routes available at the College, which could lead to higher education and increased employability."

Due to the excellent progression routes at St Helens College, Amy was able to advance in her education up to degree level. Amy has been able to tailor her education to suit her learning style and her career goals. “My apprenticeship has allowed me to progress onto degree level study. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship. It can be challenging at times, but it is so rewarding and it can open up great opportunities.”
