Rebecca

Fairfield Independent Hospital

Portrait for webRebecca, aged 20 from Billinge, is a Business Administration apprentice at Fairfield Independent Hospital.

After leaving Up Holland High School with her GCSEs, Rebecca went on to Winstanley College to complete her A levels. Although she enjoyed maths at college, she questioned whether university was the right option for her. Despite many of her friends going off to university, Rebecca decided that she wanted to take a more practical route to advance her qualifications and career and decided to pursue an apprenticeship instead.

She said, “I’d always held down a job since school and this helped me in making my decision as I enjoyed learning whilst I was working and earning. I really have learnt so much since being at Fairfield Hospital and my confidence has increased loads. I feel like I can be challenged and have the confidence to give it 100%.”

Rebecca wanted to make sure that maths was at the centre of her apprenticeship and so she decided to pursue a Business Administration course whilst working in the accounts department. Within this role, Rebecca helps with the day-to-day running of a busy office, answering financial enquiries on the telephone and helping with medical legal enquiries.

When talking about her apprenticeship, Rebecca said “I’ve loved the flexibility as I’ve been able to complete most of the work at home or whilst working at the hospital. I’ve enjoyed learning about how a business functions and how accounting in particular, contributes to this.”

A highlight for Rebecca came after recently winning a hotly contested award for ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at St Helens College. Rebecca said, “My most memorable moment so far would be winning apprentice of the year. I was overwhelmed by the recognition and support I received from both my colleagues and St Helens College.”

Fairfield Independent Hospital’s Director of Finance, IT & Performance, Tom Harrison expressed his delight that Rebecca’s hard work and attitude has been recognised, saying,  “It is great to see Rebecca winning the 'Apprentice of the Year' award at St Helens College. We are extremely proud of her achievements and her continued contribution to the Hospital. Rebecca’s apprenticeship has helped her to develop professionally and given her the confidence to excel in her role.”

Now that Rebecca has successfully completed her apprenticeship, she plans to advance her Accounting knowledge further by undertaking professional AAT qualifications at St Helens College, hoping that this will allow her to progress to become a Chartered Accountant.
