Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship - Bagnalls Painting and Decorating

Adam KnowlesPainting and Decorating Apprentice, Adam, is on a roll after making impressive progress throughout his apprenticeship with established company, Bagnalls Painting and Decorating and being crowned Junior Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year.

Adam, from Newton-Le-Willows, discovered his passion for painting and decorating after attending a taster session at St Helens College with his school, Hope Academy. At the taster, Adam took part in a ‘Construction Carousel’ where he got to try interactive activities in different fields of Construction and discovered an instant love of painting and decorating.

As soon as Adam completed his GCSEs, he joined St Helens College and enrolled on to the level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, in order to begin an apprenticeship with Bagnalls. Since then, he has progressed and completed the level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.

Commenting on his apprenticeship, Adam said, “I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others, especially to those like me, who benefit from more hands-on and vocational learning. An apprenticeship was the perfect choice for me, gaining on-the-job experience and qualifications whilst being able to earn a wage.”

Adam has participated in a number of initiatives during his apprenticeship, including competing in the ‘Junior Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year’ competition, organised by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).

Recognised by his employer for his keen eye for wallpapering, Adam was put forward for the competition, putting his wallpaper hanging skills to the ultimate test. Adam made the trip down to Doncaster, where apprentice decorators from across the UK had to competitively wallpaper a three sided booth in seven hours.

Utilising skills gained from his course and his apprenticeship, Adam went on to win the competition, seeing him crowned one of the nation’s top wallpaper hangers.

Terry O’Keefe, Painting and Decorating Tutor at St Helens College, said, “Adam has made great progress throughout his time at College. The course has seen him develop his practical and theoretical knowledge to such a high standard, which will prepare him for a successful career in the industry. Adam is set for a very successful career in the Construction industry.”

Adam’s apprenticeship has also enabled him to work across a range of jobs with various clients, with his most recent project being at Warrington Hospital. Adam explained, “My favourite part of the job is the fact that I get to travel across the Northwest to different sites. No two jobs are the same, meaning I get to work with a mixture of materials and environments, which I’m prepared for, thanks to my course at St Helens College.”

Now that Adam has completed his level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, he is hoping to progress on to the level 3 Diploma, in order to further develop his career with Bagnalls and work towards his dream of becoming a fully qualified Painter and Decorator. His ultimate goal is to set up and run his own painting and decorating business.
