Animation Masterclass with Blue Zoo WebOur level 3 Games, Animation and VFX Skills students, received an exclusive masterclass in character animation from Animation Director at London based animation company, Blue Zoo.

Animation Director, Will Cook, shared a special, two hour long, live stream with the students, where he explained the ins and outs of character animation, including fundamental techniques like how to form shapes for sounds, how to break down audio into key frames, as well as breakdown techniques to form natural looking lip syncing for the character.

Will had the students working on Maya, which is industry standard software, where they were provided with a fully rigged character, from an upcoming animated series based around the ‘Stranger Things’ universe.

During their live stream, the students took the opportunity to ask Will some career and industry related questions, which led Will to share his own story on how he got into the industry and how he achieved his role at Blue Zoo. He also shared his top tips and tricks that he has learnt and from his time in industry.

The live stream was organised as part of the students Next Gen course. Which is an industry led vocational course delivered at St Helens College, supported by the Next Gen Skills Academy, which provides direct industry exposure to students, via masterclasses, tuition and industry written assignments and projects.

Game Art Tutor, Rob Hinde, commented: “Opportunities likes these are invaluable to our students. Being able to apply their skills to industry projects and speak with experts in the field puts them at a real advantage. The Next Gen course is so unique, and brings a lot of opportunity, especially as only 10 locations in the UK have next Gen Accreditation, and we are one of them"
