Designing a Bright Future

Thomas is designing a bright future for himself after unlocking his passion and creativity for games by studying the level 3 Extended Diploma in Games, Animation and VFX at St Helens College.

Joining us from De La Salle High School, Thomas has had some fantastic opportunities on his course, from developing gaming environments in industry-standard software to gaining insight from inspiring industry guest speakers such as LEGO.

The College’s level 3 Extended Diploma in Games, Animation and VFX is supported by the NextGen Skills Academy, an organisation that works with leading employers to enable students like Thomas, to become the next generation of creators, entering companies with exactly the right skills and knowledge for the workplace.

This unique partnership is like no other in the Northwest, as it enables students to gain access to incredible resources on a course which is designed by leading industry partners such as Ubisoft, Sony, Framestore, Blue Zoo, Double Negative and Sega.

Aspiring 3D Games Artist, Thomas, has since completed his course, gaining D*D*D and with a desire to study closer to home, in an environment he has clearly thrived in, he made the decision to progress on to BA (Hons) Game Art at University Centre St Helens to enhance his skills and knowledge.

Speaking to Thomas about his time at College, he explained, “I loved every minute of my level 3 course, exploring everything from character design, concept art and animation to digital painting and 3D modelling!”

Currently in the first year of his BA (Hons) Game Art degree, Thomas is developing his traditional art skills using software such as Unreal Engine – an advanced real-time 3D creation platform for photo real visuals and immersive experiences, whilst studying character creation concepts and designing fantasy weapons.

He commented, “Since starting my degree at University Centre St Helens, I’ve made so much progress! I’ve observed a massive improvement in my work within digital painting and I have taken the time to focus on contextual studies, which has given me a new appreciation for the inspiration behind games. The support I’ve had from my tutors whilst doing this has been invaluable too.”

Thomas is now taking steps to secure some valuable work experience in the industry over summer, as he continues his journey to becoming a 3D Games Artist. His ultimate goal is to one day open his very own games studio.
