This short, leisure course is designed for anyone wishing to try their hand at joinery or woodwork and will provide participants with an introduction to this craft.

You will have the chance to learn from professionals, who have a wealth of experience from working in the industry.

The course will start on Tuesday 25th February 2025 and will take three weeks to complete. You will attend college on Tuesday evening, from 6.00pm – 9.00pm.

The course takes place at our STEM Centre, Technology Campus, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

Topics covered include:

  • Selection and use of hand tools and some power tools
  • Measuring and cutting timber
  • Fit doors and door linings, architraves, and skirting
  • Fitting locks and door furniture

Stout footwear is required (no open-toe sandals or high heels permitted). Overalls or old clothes are also recommended.

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly, supportive tutors.

There is no formal assessment. The course aims to increase your own knowledge of the subject matter.
There are no formal entry requirements. All you will need is commitment and enthusiasm. As with all our introduction courses the main emphasis is to come and enjoy the workshops.

You may be eligible for funding if you have not recently participated in a similar programme, or received any other recent government funded training.

There are a number of fee options for this course including:

  • If you are unemployed – FREE
  • If you are employed – £30
  • If you are not eligible for funding – £100
You may want to develop your skills further and apply to study for a recognised accredited qualification.
