Introduction to Sewing

During this course, you will learn how to sew using professional techniques, alongside creating a varied portfolio of sewing samples and finishing techniques.

This short course is all about fun and creativity. You will work with a range of fabrics while focussing on sewing, seams, hems and much more. You will also look at different aspects of sewing and garment construction.

This course has various start dates throughout the year. You will attend one evening per week and the course will take 8 weeks to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

During this course, you will cover the following:

  • Learn how to use a sewing machine
  • Understanding a commercial pattern (Introduction)
  • Take personal measurements
  • Learn how to adapt a pattern to fit
  • Undertake pattern cutting and assembling garments
  • Various seam and hem techniques (Introduction)
  • Undertake simple alterations
  • Create your own garments or zipped cushion cover
  • Experiment with zips and buttonholes (Optional)

There is no formal assessment. You will be given feedback based on your progress with suggestions and guidance for areas for improvement.

As with all our leisure courses the main emphasis is to come along and enjoy the course!

There are no formal entry requirements. All you need is commitment and enthusiasm.

You may be eligible for funding if you have not recently participated in a similar programme, or received any other recent government funded training.

There are a number of fee options for this course including:

  • If you are unemployed – FREE
  • If you are employed – £30
  • If you are not eligible for funding – £180
You may wish to progress on to an accredited qualification in a creative arts subject which will allow you to practice your skills in the industry.
