More information

We have various start dates throughout the year and the course takes up to 20 weeks to complete. There is an option to study either during the day or in the evening.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

We all need maths in everyday life and functional skills qualifications help you to learn it in a way that makes it real and relevant to everyone. While you might not have enjoyed maths at school, our experienced tutors will support you to learn the maths skills needed for your next steps in life, work, and study.

This course will help you to understand the maths that you need to get by in the real world and develop the maths skills that you need to be able to use on a daily basis.

This will include not just the basic numeracy skills but also how to calculate change, work out what bank statements mean, learn about metric units of measurement, and many more skills that we all need.

Topics covered include:

  • Number (whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages)
  • Measure
  • Shape and space
  • Handling data including statistical measures and probability

Assessments are flexible and will be undertaken when you are ready.

For all levels, you will need to sit an examination and you will be fully supported by your tutor.

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly supportive tutors.

You don’t need any previous qualifications to undertake this course. However, in order to determine the most suitable level of study for your needs, you will undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment prior to entry onto the course.

This course is free to study providing you don’t already hold a grade 4 or above at GCSE level in this subject.

Once you have completed your maths qualification you will be able to progress on to the next level. We offer maths qualifications all the way up to GCSE level.

It may also mean that you meet the entry criteria for other college or university courses, as well as improving your career prospects by gaining a qualification that is recognised by employers.
