Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care (Adult Course)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

You will gain hands-on experience with a wide variety of species, which will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and experience to progress your career in the industry or secure employment.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend College three days per week, from 9.00am - 4.30pm.

The course takes place at St Helens College, STEM Centre Campus, St Helens WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

You will gain an understanding of the various aspects of animal management through a number of units such as:

  • Maintaining animal health and welfare
  • Animal feeding and accommodation
  • Animal behaviour and handling
  • Working in the animal care industry
  • Health and safety for the land-based industries
  • Principles of animal biology
  • Introduction to farmed livestock
  • Animal nursing

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by a combination of controlled assessments, including exams, assignments and practical assessments.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have four GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above, including English, science and maths, and preferably a minimum of three days voluntary experience within the animal sector.

What are the course fees?

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

You have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills, preparing you for university or a higher-level role in the industry, by progressing on to the level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management.

Former students who have completed this course have gone on to secure jobs in wildlife establishments, kennels, catteries, animal welfare organisations, charities and equine centres.
