Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup

If you want to work in hair and makeup within the media industry, this course gives you all the skills you need to be successful.

You'll create intricate makeup and hair designs and learn how to apply makeup for camera, TV and film.

This course is suitable for those who wish to develop the practical skills required to launch a career as a Professional Makeup and Hair Artist within the media industry.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will commence in September and will take one year to complete.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • The art of photographic makeup
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Apply makeup
  • Instruct on makeup application
  • Provide nail art
  • Body art design
  • Shape and colour eyebrows

You'll create intricate makeup and hair designs and as part of enrichment, you will learn how to fake bruises, cuts and scratches for TV and film, and how to apply makeup for camera. You'll even have the opportunity to explore nail art and body art design.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the course by a combination of practical assessments, written assignments, end of module exams and portfolio building.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have four GCSEs at grade 3 (equivalent to grade D) or above, including English and maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2020), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to progress on to one of the following:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technologies
  • Level 3 Diploma in Makeup Artistry
  • Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Makeup

Alternatively, you may want to move into employment as a Beauty Receptionist, Makeup Consultant, Sales Representative or become self-employed.

Additional Information

As part of this programme you are required to wear a uniform. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from a recommended supplier. You may be eligible for financial support to cover these costs.
