A Taste of China

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

Chinese food is famous all over the world. Chinese cuisine has countless cooking techniques and covers a variety of tastes, including sweet, salty, spicy, or sour.

This fascinating course will develop your culinary flair and will allow you to prepare a range of delicious Chinese dishes. The course allows participants to develop their cooking skills by experimenting with fresh local produce and exploring quick and versatile methods to cook mouth-watering dishes.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course is due to start on on Tuesday 11th January 2022. You will attend college on Tuesday evening from 6.00pm - 9.00pm, for four weeks.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

The course will allow you to explore various ingredients, develop some basic skills in Chinese cuisine and encourage you to develop your own creative culinary ideas.

You will learn new skills in culinary techniques to produce a range of dishes that could include:

  • Chow mein
  • Kung Po
  • Blackbean sauce based dishes
  • Oyster sauce based dishes
  • Spring rolls
  • Prawn toast

Course participants will be able to develop their awareness of Health and Safety relating to the preparation of food, food safety awareness, practical knife skills and stove control, whilst learning logical and coherent methods for producing Chinese dishes.

How is it assessed?

There is no formal assessment. You will be given feedback based on your progress with suggestions and guidance for areas for improvement.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements, as with all of our leisure cookery courses, the main emphasis is to come along and enjoy. The course is suitable for all levels of ability.

You will need to wear strong, flat sensible shoes and bring along an apron, tea towel, and an oven glove.

Please bring along a container to take what you have made home with you.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £150. The course price is inclusive of all of the ingredients that you will need for each session. You can take home your creations to enjoy.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

You may wish to progress onto our other Colours Cookery School courses or alternatively you may wish to pursue an accredited qualification in this subject, which will allow you to practice your skills in the trade.
