City and Guilds Level 3 Technical Certificate in Engineering (Adult Course)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

Designed for students looking to launch a career in the engineering industry, this course covers a wide range of industry areas e.g. engineering design, innovation and new technologies, civil engineering, rail engineering and aerospace engineering.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will start in September and will take two years to complete.

The course takes place at St Helens College, STEM Centre Campus, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

You will cover the following units:

  • Engineering maths and principles
  • Engineering materials
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Engineering design
  • Electronics control and instrumentation
  • Innovation and new technologies
  • Optional unit - power and energy in engineering

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by an extended assignment on your optional unit and an exam and will also undertake a synoptic project, where you will design and make a product.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above, (equivalent to grade C) and a relevant level 2 qualification in engineering. Candidates with suitable industrial experience may also be considered.

What are the course fees?

Course fees are dependent on your personal circumstances and you may be eligible for funding. For more information on the financial support that may be available, please visit our dedicated Adult Financial support page.

If you are aged 19 or over, you could also choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees enabling you to study now, pay later. Loan eligibility is not dependent on income or employment status and there is no credit check. Loan repayments do not start until you have finished your course and earn over £26,575 per year. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you may wish to progress on to an Extended Diploma or HNC. The qualification also carries UCAS points, which you can use in combination with other courses to apply for higher education.
