Level 2 Preparation for Work in the Advanced Manufacturing Sector


This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

Are you considering a career change into the engineering sector, or keen to develop new skills in engineering?

This course is ideal for adults who have an interest in engineering and are looking for an introduction to some of the latest engineering sectors. It is also suitable for those currently employed within the sector who may be considering a role change or re-training to pursue a career in advanced manufacturing maintenance and renewable technologies.

This exciting six week taster course covers different areas of growth within engineering. During this course you will be given an insight into electrical maintenance, green energy, business efficiency and welding.

The course is both practical and theoretical, giving you the chance to get hands on experience in a workshop, as well as improving your understanding of the sector.

The need for highly skilled engineering technicians, has been identified by multiple engineering companies within the Liverpool City Region. This course has been designed to help close the current skills gap.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course is planned to start on Tuesday 4th May 2021 and will take 6 weeks to complete. You will attend college on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, from 6.00pm to 9.00pm.

Start dates and duration are subject to change, based on Government COVID-19 guidelines.

The course takes place at St Helens College, STEM Centre Campus, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

This programme aims to introduce some of the main fields of engineering.

Topics covered will include:

  • Green energy
  • Electrical maintenance
  • Business efficiency
  • Welding

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed through a number practical tests and observations after each module.

There will also be some written elements including maths for engineers and safety legislation that will be assessed via a written test.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

No formal qualifications are necessary for this course. However, GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above (equivalent to a C), would be an advantage.

What are the course fees?

This course is FREE for residents within the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Halton, Knowsley, St Helen's, Sefton, Wirral), regardless of your individual circumstances.

If you live outside of the Liverpool City Region course fees apply. The fee for this course is £399.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in a career in engineering or those who are considering further study next year and would like to gain some broad experience to find out which direction suits them best.

The course provides progression on to a number of routes, including full-time level 3 courses, apprenticeships and employment.
