Fast Track Maths Functional Skills

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

Functional Skills are nationally recognised qualifications in maths. The aim of these courses is to improve your maths skills, assisting you in your life, work and further learning.

These courses are designed to meet the needs of the world of work and are particularly suitable for those people either actively looking for employment, as well as those in employment wishing to progress in their career.

They can also be used as a stepping stone on to GCSE or help you gain access to further college or higher education courses.

This fast track course will enable you to complete a level 1 or level 2 Functional Skills qualification in just 4 weeks.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will start in April 2024 and will take 4-6 weeks to complete. You will attend two 3 hour sessions per week. It is a flexible course and can be studied either during the day or in the evening.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

We all need maths in everyday life and functional skills qualifications helps you to learn it in a way that makes it real and relevant to everyone. Whilst you might not have enjoyed maths at school, our experienced tutors will support you to learn the maths skills needed for your next steps in life, work and study.

This course will help you to understand the maths that you need to get by in the real world and develop the maths skills that you need to be able to use on a daily basis. This will include not just the basic numeracy skills but also how to calculate change, work out what bank statements mean, learn about metric units of measurement and many more skills that we all need.

Topics covered include:

  • Number (whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages)
  • Measure
  • Shape and space
  • Handling data including statistical measures and probability

How is it assessed?

For all levels, you will need to sit an examination and you will be fully supported by your tutor.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You don't need any previous qualifications to undertake this course. However, in order to determine the most suitable level of study for your needs, you will undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment prior to entry onto the course.

What are the course fees?

This course is free to study providing you don't already hold a grade 4 (equivalent to grade C) or above at GCSE level in this subject.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed your maths qualification you will be able to progress on to the next level. We offer maths qualifications all the way up to GCSE level.

It may also mean that you meet the entry criteria for other college or university courses, as well as improving your career prospects by gaining a qualification that is recognised by employers.
