English Functional Skills (Entry level, level 1 or level 2)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

The aim of these nationally recognised qualifications is to improve your English skills, assisting you in your life and work. You will study at your own pace with lots of support from your tutor.

They are designed to meet the needs of the world of work and are particularly suitable for those people either actively looking for employment as well as those in employment wishing to move on or up in their career.

You will gain the practical skills needed to succeed in further learning, employment and the wider society.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

We have various start dates throughout the year and the course takes up to20 weeks to complete. There is an option to study either during the day or in the evening.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

Functional English provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across the three subject skill areas; speaking and listening, reading and writing. The study of English can broaden your skills and confidence, allowing you to develop skills that help you to get on in life and work.

You will learn to write concisely and with clarity and will apply this knowledge to a number of practical writing tasks, such as article and letter writing.

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly supportive tutors.

How is it assessed?

Assessments are flexible and will be undertaken when you are ready.

For all levels, you will need to sit an examination and you will be fully supported by your tutor.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You don't need any previous qualifications to undertake this course. However, in order to determine the most suitable level of study for your needs, you will undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment prior to entry onto the course.

What are the course fees?

This course is free to study providing you don't already hold a grade 4 or above at GCSE level in this subject.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed your English qualification you will be able to progress on to the next level. We offer English qualifications all the way up to GCSE level.

It may also mean that you meet the entry criteria for other college or university courses, as well as improving your career prospects by gaining a qualification that is recognised by employers.
