Level 3 CMI Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

The Chartered Institute of Management (CMI) is the only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards of management and leadership excellence. With a member community of over 100,000, CMI gives managers and leaders, and their organisations, the skills they need to improve their performance and create an impact.

This qualification has been developed for junior managers, supervisors and first line managers who have operational responsibility for a defined area of activity and who wish to build on and develop their existing management skills and knowledge. This qualification gives junior managers the communication and motivational skills to help improve operational efficiency.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course has various start dates throughout the year and will take one year to complete. However, we also offer the option to study individual modules with flexible start dates, allowing you to join the course at the beginning of each module. More information available upon enquiry.

You will attend College one evening per week from 6.00pm - 9.00pm, at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus.

Dependent upon demand, this course can be delivered to employees directly within the workplace. This is facilitated with study that is more intensive over a shorter period.

What will I study?

Taught by industry professionals, you will explore the key concepts and elements of first line management.

The following eight modules will be covered:

  • Principles of Management and Leadership
  • Managing a team to achieve results
  • Managing individuals to be effective in their role
  • Building stakeholder relations using effective communication
  • Developing skills, knowledge and abilities of individuals and teams
  • Managing budgets and resources
  • Managing data and information
  • Managing own personal and professional development

How is it assessed?

You will complete a written assignment at the end of each module. No examinations are required.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

Ideally, you should have already achieved a level 2 qualification although your previous experience will also be considered when applying for this course.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £1,300. This includes the registration fee for CMI membership. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

If you are aged 19 or over, you could apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover part of your course fees. An Advanced Learner Loan enables you to study now, pay later. Loan eligibility isn't dependent on income or employment status and there is no credit check. Loan repayments don't start until you have finished your course and earn over £27,295 per year. Alternatively, your employer may be willing to fund your course and we can invoice them directly.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will hold a nationally recognised CMI qualification, valued by employers. You will be qualified to be able to register as an Associate Grade member of CMI.

You may choose to progress on to our CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership qualification, or pursue other academic routes with us.
