Skills for Progression to Further Education (GCSE English, Maths and Science)

If you did not achieve the GCSE grades needed to study at College, this programme is designed to help you achieve this, whilst preparing you to progress on to further education.

Studying three GCSEs in English language, maths and combined science, in one academic year, you will build and develop your knowledge and skills to prepare you for your next step towards your goals and ambitions.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this course, you will study three key GCSE subjects including:

  • GCSE Maths
  • GCSE English Language
  • GCSE Combined Science

You will also study employability skills that will help you develop your academic writing, employability, and life skills. The programme will help you to advance your knowledge and skills as well as build new relationships, confidence and self-esteem.

How is it assessed?

During this course, you will be assessed by external examinations at the end of the academic year.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

If you have previously studied at GCSE level, we would expect that you have achieved four GCSEs at grade 3 in single award, dual award or combined science as well as maths and English language.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

This programme provides access to a wide range of level three courses at College, from animal management and creative arts courses to engineering and science.

Tutors during the programme will provide support, advice and guidance to help you select a pathway that meets your goals, interests and aspirations.

If you are aged 18 and above, upon completion of this course, you may decide to progress into employment, choosing from a wide range of sectors.
