Our Fine Art Painting students recently enjoyed a virtual workshop with contemporary artist Josephine Wood, where they took part in an abbreviated sketching exercise.

Josephine has exhibited widely in the UK and Internationally, including Whitechapel Gallery in London, Centre for Contemporary Art Glasgow and Mishenmarche Gallery in Berlin.

During the session Josephine spoke about the techniques and processes she uses within her own work, whilst inviting questions from our budding artists.

The students were challenged to pick a photo that had sentimental value to them and create up to 10 drawings, deconstructing and reconstructing the image whilst retaining the sentiment of the photo.

Utilising their skills, the students created stunning unique pieces using a variety of materials, including pencil, pen, highlighter, oil paints and more, which were then presented to Josephine for constructive feedback.

Fiona Stirling, programme leader for Fine Art Painting, said: "The real-life experience of speaking to an artist about their work helps the students to really understand and engage with contemporary painting.

"Having the opportunity to ask questions directly is such an exciting way to learn. The paintings that everyone made after the session were so innovative and brimming with new ideas, techniques, and processes."

First-year student Jenny Raynes said: "The session has been useful to find out how different artists work and what influences them. It has given me a broader view of how to approach my own work."
