Our Theatre and Performance students recently showcased an original production at Lucem House Community Cinema, in conjunction with St Helens Libraries.

The students, who recently completed the first year of their FdA Theatre and Performance degree, recently formed “In A Minute Studios,” a theatre company performing established and original pieces. This time, the group performed an entertaining piece of their own creation, “The Adventures of Ray and Crab,” delighting an audience of young children and their parents.

The performance formed part of the St Helens Festival of Imagination, a collection of events and activities organised by St Helens Libraries for local young children and their families to attend.

St Helens Library Services Manager, Kathryn Boothroyd, told us: “The performance was excellent! It had everything to entertain children, from visual effects to audience participation. I could tell by the reaction of the families present that they were enjoying themselves.”

The past few months have been spent writing and perfecting the performance, including recording and editing voiceovers and sound effects, orchestrating a light show and crafting impressive set pieces.

Proud tutor, Rebekka Jolley, said: “We were approached by Dr Jim Valentine from St Helens Library Services, to see if the students could create a community performance for young children as part of the St Helens Festival of Imagination. This required the students to form “In a Minute Studios” and take on different job roles, from director to marketing manager, client liaison and stage manager. They’ve all got strong problem-solving skills and when presented with various issues they overcame them by working together.

“The group worked really well during their first-year studies, and I knew when we were presented with this opportunity they’d be willing to put 100% effort in, working over their summer break to create an amazing performance!”
