Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology

Lauren Heaps

Music alumna, Lauren, has taken an inspiring step towards her dream career, after securing an impressive place at one of the UK's leading performing arts institutes in Liverpool, LIPA.

Lauren joined St Helens College from St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School (Whiston) to complete the level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator), but soon realised that her passion belonged to the music industry and the magnetic pull of a career on stage.

The aspiring professional singer said, “It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. Music has always been my passion and studying at College has literally changed my life. I’ve had the most amazing time and shared some of the most amazing moments with my class and tutors! It gave me confidence, new skills and friends for life.”

Whilst studying the level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology, Lauren has taken advantage of some unique opportunities as part of her course, such as visiting London’s highly acclaimed Abbey Road Studios and successfully planning and hosting music events, ‘Killer Noise’ and ‘Original Big Sounds’ at College.

Commenting on her experience at College, Lauren, said, “I loved going to London and Abbey Road studios. I’ve loved the music events that we planned and delivered but most of all, I’ve loved learning everything that I have and spending time with some of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life. The course has helped me to secure my place at LIPA where I am studying a degree in Music, Theatre & Entertainment Management as well as focusing on my singing career.”

Music Technology Tutor, Ant, said, “Studying music at St Helens College is so much more than mastering an instrument and perfecting performance skills. We enable students to explore the advanced technical side of the industry too, including everything from music production, sequencing and sound creation, to songwriting, music and sound for moving image and audio engineering.

He added, “Lauren was a fantastic and talented student. She was always working hard to develop her skills and pushing the boundaries to explore her capabilities. She has an exciting career ahead of her and I won’t be surprised if she’s headlining a major festival in the next couple of years!”

Since progressing on to LIPA, Lauren has already met some of the music and theatre industry’s top professionals and has even travelled to the home of country music, Nashville, to embark upon some work experience.

Lauren is feeling very positive about this next chapter of her life and very hopeful for what the future will bring. She hopes that in “in five years’ time, I am settled in a career in the music industry and being truly happy, living a life exactly how I’ve always wanted to.”
