Progression Pathway: Level 2 Certificate in Gym/Fitness Instructor, level 3 Certificate in Personal Training, FdSc Exercise, Health and Fitness

“I am really enjoying my time on the Exercise, Health and Fitness degree with University Centre St Helens. It has allowed me to study a range of subject areas that are of particular interest to me. When I leave, not only will I hold a degree but I will also have a Sports Massage qualification too, enhancing my employability opportunities and the career pathways that I can pursue.”

Exercise, Health and Fitness student, Jake, is making great progress towards a career in the fitness industry after progressing from St Helens College on to a degree with University Centre St Helens.

Before enrolling at St Helens College, the 21-year old from Sutton, had his sights set on a career in the Army, but an injury during a rugby match, meant he was unable to complete his military training.

Determined to pursue a career that would allow him to fulfil his passion for fitness, Jake enrolled onto the level 2 Certificate in Gym/Fitness Instructor at St Helens College, before progressing onto the level Certificate in Personal Training, granting Jake the chance to take a passion he has held from the age of 13 to a professional level.

Upon successful completion of both the level 2 and level 3 qualifications, Jake decided to continue his learning by progressing onto the Exercise, Health and Fitness foundation degree at University Centre St Helens, with a dream of ultimately progressing into a role that will allow him to work with high performance athletes.

After applying for, and receiving offers from a range of universities, including the University of Central Lancashire and Liverpool John Moores, Jake made the decision to accept the offer from University Centre St Helens. His decision was swayed by the content of the modules he would be studying. He was particularly interested in studying nutrition and physiology in depth, key interest areas for Jake.

Jake is now looking forward to starting the second year of his Exercise, Health and Fitness degree, where he also has the unique opportunity to complete a level 3 Sports Massage qualification alongside his foundation degree. As well as being an exercise and fitness enthusiast Jake also has a personal interest in healing and injuries so undertaking the additional level 3 Sports Massage qualification will compliment his second year degree studies as well as widening his career opportunities.

Outside of his degree studies, Jake is already working successfully as a Gym Instructor at a national chain of gyms, where he has been able to use his growing bank of qualifications to gain a regular set of active clients that he is a personal trainer for.

Upon completion of his foundation degree Jake hopes to progress onto the BA (Hons) Top-up at The University of Chester, he may even decide to progress onto a master’s qualification in the future, allowing him to specialise further in specific aspects of exercise, health and fitness. However, he remains determined to achieve his long-term goal of working in a position that will see him coach and train high performance athletes.

Speaking about his time to date on the degree, Jake said “I am really enjoying my time on the Exercise, Health and Fitness degree with University Centre St Helens. It has allowed me to study a range of subject areas that are of particular interest to me. When I leave, not only will I hold a degree but I will also have a Sports Massage qualification too, enhancing my employability opportunities and the career pathways that I can pursue.”
