Progression Pathway: St Cuthberts High School, level 3 BTEC Public Services (St Helens College), Foundation Degree Criminal Justice

“I am really enjoying my time here. University Centre St Helens has given me the opportunity to get in contact with those who work in the industry, keeping me focused on what I need to do to achieve my goals. As a degree level student, I really benefit from the silent study spaces in the library and really enjoy attending classes, where I am taught by experienced practitioners who are passionate about their subject."

Chris from St Helens, studied at St Cuthbert's High School before joining St Helens College on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services, with hopes of turning his dream career into a reality.

Intrigued by the uniformed services elements of the BTEC, Chris made the decision to take his interest one-step further and progressed on to the Foundation Degree in Criminal Justice at University Centre St Helens.

Impressed with the support received at College and positive feedback from friends, who successfully progressed on to secure successful employment in the industry after completing the degree at University Centre St Helens, Chris was eager to continue his studies. Chris began his journey on the FdA Criminal Justice degree, to which he later progressed to the BA (Hons) Criminal Justice Top-up, gaining a full honours degree.

On the Criminal Justice degrees, Chris had the opportunity to study a range of topics, from the criminal justice system, to theories of criminology and victimology. Of particular interest to Chris was the political history side of the degree. He explained, "I have always been really interested in the development of the country from a social and political standpoint but the knowledge I have gained on my degree has given me a newfound appreciation of the country's legacy."

Commenting on his time at University Centre St Helens, Chris said, "University Centre St Helens gave me the opportunity to get in contact with those who work in the industry, keeping me focused on what I needed to do to achieve my goals. As a degree student, I really benefited from the silent study spaces in the library and really enjoyed attending classes, where I was taught by experienced practitioners who are passionate about their subject and who always go out of their way to support their students."

To those considering a degree at University Centre St Helens, Chris advised, "I would certainly encourage others to consider University Centre St Helens - it is in a great town centre location, the degree is great and the regular one to one sessions with lecturers means help is always available."

Since graduating from the BA (Hons) Criminal Justice (Top-up), Chris has continued to strive to fulfil his dream of becoming a Police Officer, and is in the final recruitment stages of becoming a member of the Police Force.
