Course in-depth
### What will I study? #### Year 1 The first year will introduce you to contemporary supply chain issues and the emerging issues that affect their configuration and operation. This will ensure you are aware of the main themes as many will be explored in detail in subsequent modules. You will develop your skills in an academic context to support your studies throughout the duration of the course. You will gain an understanding how to manage people in the workplace which is key to organisational performance. Supply chain in the digital age will also be explored by examining how several famous businesses embraced the challenges of the internet and came to dominate the marketplace. You will be introduced to negotiation; the basic types and the phases in a negotiation and the skills required to become an effective negotiator in purchasing. Legal aspects relating to real business situations so you can identify and relate relevant legal rules will also be explored. #### Year 2 The second year further develops your skills. You will examine transport operations, from choosing the most appropriate transportation mode and route to specifying and controlling the movements that take place along the supply chain. Using a range of real-world and fictional case studies, you will be encouraged to develop solutions to problems such as bottlenecks, quality problems and cost over-runs during supply chain operations. The role of inventory, and of warehousing in terms of its inbound, internal and outbound processes will be examined. By the second year, your skills and ability to appraise problems associated with managing an organistion within the context of the modern business environment will be enhanced. The work placement will provide you with experience of working in a supply chain, presenting opportunities for reflective analysis of management, business operations and practice in a work context. ### Professional recognition The programme is designed to comply with the professional body requirements of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). ### How will I study? You will study through lectures, workshops, seminars, selfdirected study, written work, presentations, group work and guest lectures. The second year work-based learning module will provide a professional setting in which you can apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired from the course. In addition to classroom-based study, you will also have the opportunity to observe social policies in practice by visiting local authorities, housing associations and social welfare agencies. ### How will I be assessed? In terms of assessment, you can expect time constrained exams, essays, reports, presentations, portfolios, and others. These contribute to your final marks and allow you to demonstrate that you’ve met the learning outcomes. We also use other forms of assessment to help you learn, provide you with feedback and inform your development, though these do not count towards your final marks. You’ll also receive feedback on assessment drafts. These will help to identify any areas which would benefit from extra attention on your part, or where you need extra support from your tutor. ### Who will be teaching me? ### Year 1 (Level 4) #### Skills and Personal Development Planning The purpose of this module is to aid the student in recognising transferable skills previously attained prior to the commencement of the module, as a starting point for your Personal Development Plan, which will continue to be developed throughout your programme of studies. The module will assist the student to gain knowledge of a range of study skills in an academic context to support their studies throughout the duration of the programme. The module will equip the student to undertake basic investigative research and aid the student to present your findings in an academic context, underpinning your practical application of skills and knowledge and to gain an understanding of intellectual enquiry of theoretical perspectives and movements. The student will also also gain knowledge and experience in key employability skills such as personal selling, problem solving, handling customer complaints, communicating to different audiences and meeting management. #### People and Performance in Organisations Understanding how to manage people in the workplace is key to organisational performance. This module serves to provide you with a practical understanding of the different aspects of human resource management. You will learn about the different activities of Human Resource managers in organisations including people resourcing, training and development, managing the employment relationship with emphasis on managing performance. The impact of external factors will also be considered. The module also incorporates Personal Tutoring with the emphasis on supporting you in the development of knowledge and skills, as part of personal development planning. #### Introduction to Contemporary Supply Chain Issues This module aims to acquaint students with emerging issues that affect the configuration and operation of supply chains. These may be political, economic, social or technical in nature. Students will ‘future-proof’ their knowledge of the supply chain by appreciating the forces that have shaped present-day arrangements, and will explore some of the themes that may be relevant when they enter the workforce. The importance of responding effectively to emerging business issues in a supply chain context will also be considered. It is intended that concepts and issues introduced here are of use throughout your studies, as many themes will be explored in greater detail in subsequent modules. #### Basics of Marketing, eCommerce and Fulfilment This module addresses the operations of supply chains in the digital age, where traditional roles are changing and customers increasingly expect next day if not same-day delivery. The module examines how several famous businesses embraced the challenges of the Internet, and came to dominate the marketplace – and how they must continue to innovate. The module introduces students to a wide range of technologies employed in business-to-business communications, and in communication with the customer. Students will explore the potential for a businesses to expand the use of key eCommerce technologies. Emerging trends are also reviewed, with the aim of identifying future growth potential. #### Introduction to Purchasing and Negotiation The module introduces you to negotiation; the basic types and the phases in a negotiation and the skills required to become an effective negotiator in purchasing. All stages of negotiation are addressed, from preparation, through bargaining and finding mutual benefit to closing and drawing up a contract with particular reference to the supply chain. The module introduces types of contract and their key elements plus breach, termination, enforcing and voiding of contracts to supply. Resolving disputes and avoiding deadlock are also addressed. The impact of risk and ethical considerations are also explored. #### Business Law This module is designed as an introduction to the law as it relates to business operations and activities. The module will help you to understand the legal framework within which business operates and the legal implications of business activities. The module aims to develop your ability to identify and relate relevant legal rules to realistic business situations. ### Year 2 (Level 5) #### Fundamentals of Transport Operations The module examines transport operations, from choosing the most appropriate transportation mode and route to specifying and controlling the movements that take place along the supply chain. It reveals how risks can be mitigated against, and how cost can be reduced across the supply chain as a whole, while enhancing safety and security. It also analyses solutions to problems that a manager in this field will encounter when operating internationally. In addition, it demonstrates some emerging trends that hint at the future of supply chain transportation. #### Supply Chain Operations Management Foundation This module will introduce you to the principles of operations management, and help you to understand its role in the supply chain. You will develop the knowledge to manage and plan a range of operations, from one-off projects to high-volume manufacturing. The module uses a range of real-world and fictional case studies, encouraging you to develop solutions to problems such as bottlenecks, quality problems and cost over-runs. The module is highly relevant to industry, aiming to ensure that goods arrive on time and in a cost-effective manner. Key topics include addressing risk and uncertainty, and ensuring competitiveness in a global marketplace. #### Introduction to Inventory and Warehousing The module examines inventory and warehouse management, from understanding the terminologies, concepts and philosophies to measuring inventory and warehousing performance that take place right along the supply chain, for example serving the retail industry. It examines the role of inventory, and of warehousing in terms of its inbound, internal and outbound processes. It also assesses inventory and warehousing optimisation strategies, and the role of information technology systems in this aspect of the modern supply chain. In addition, it discusses sustainability, and the future of inventory and warehouse management in the supply chain. #### Principles of Financial Management and Decision Making This module aims to enable you to appraise problems associated with managing an organistion within the context of the modern business environment and to develop an awareness of how management accounting techniques can aid management decision making, planning and control. You will also develop your presentation and team working skills through the delivery of a group presentation. #### Work Placement The purpose of this module is to provide you with experience of working in a supply chain, presenting opportunities for reflective analysis of management, business operations and practice in a work context. A series of workshops occurring before the work placement commences will cover personal development planning (career planning and personal skills analysis), an outline of the requirements of the reflective diary, interview skills (to be practised with the aim of obtaining a work placement, job interview, or promotion), plus health and safety in the work place and responsibilities as a manager. You will be involved in finding and applying for a work placement. Usually, full time students will be required to work in a business that offers a supply chain context, and offers a suitable role. This module serves to develop employability skills with particular emphasis on communication skills, teamwork, organisation and planning, self-awareness and initiative.Entry Criteria
### Entry Requirements For 2018 entry you will need 64 UCAS Tariff points. Some typical examples of how you can achieve 48 UCAS Tariff points are detailed below. * A levels - CC * BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma – Merit, Pass, Pass (MPP) Please note, the above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awards may also be accepted. Any subjects are acceptable at Level 3. You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics and a Science. ### Prior learning and experience University Centre St Helens intends to recruit students from a varied range of backgrounds and experience onto its courses. Offers of a place on the course will not be based solely upon academic qualifications alone and related skills gained in the workplace will also be considered. The final decision in terms of acceptance onto the course will lie with the Programme Leader. ### Additional entry requirements All suitably qualified applicants have the opportunity to attend an interview.
