Join our online session, designed for employers to discover how much training an apprentice may cost, what funding, grants and incentives are available, and whether your business is eligible.
Our Apprenticeship Team will be on hand to offer a range of general advice for businesses interested in employing an apprentice and information on age related funding grants. We will also be joined by other experts who will share their advice and knowledge.
Knowsley Council | Apprenticeship Team: Knowsley Council are currently offering a grant to support employers to recruit new apprentices who are Knowsley residents.
CITB | Funding Advisor: CITB offers grants for approved apprenticeships at level 2 and above which focus on the core construction skills that are needed across the industry.
Liverpool City Region Combined Authority | Employer Broker: The authority have links with large levy paying organisations, whose unused levy funds can be transferred to small and medium businesses (SME’s) to help fund their apprenticeship training.

Green Home Energy Training Courses
At our new £500k Green Energy Skills Centre in St Helens, we provide a comprehensive range of training courses, designed to upskill industry professionals and train future heating engineers in green home energy technologies such as air source heat pumps.

Electric Vehicle Charging
Are you a qualified electrician, looking to expand your skill set and knowledge of domestic and small commercial electric vehicle charging installations?

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.
This course will provide learners with the technical skills and underpinning knowledge to carry out rail track maintenance in a safe and industry relevant way.
When will I start the course and how long will it take?
This course will take eight weeks to complete and takes place on the following start dates:
- Monday 15th April 2024
- Monday 3rd June 2024
You will attend College Monday to Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm.
This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.
What will I study?
The following qualifications are delivered over the first six weeks of the course:
- Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
- Level 2 Certificate in Rail Engineering Underpinning Knowledge
Learners will then complete two weeks of Critical Safety training, giving the opportunity to achieve employable tickets/licences components including:
- Personal Track Safety (PTS)
- Track Induction Course (TIC)
- DCCR
- OLEC1
- Small tools training
- A Network Rail Approved medical and Drug/alcohol test
- A Network rail approved PPE
How is it assessed?
You will need to complete a portfolio of written work as well as be observed showing practical skills when working on rail track, which will include physically challenging activities in various weather conditions.
You will also need to pass written and practical examinations to achieve some of the licences covered within the Critical Safety Training.
Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?
No previous qualifications are required. However, learners must be physically fit and healthy to undertake manual labour.
Learners must not have any substance abuse issues as this will be flagged on the drug and alcohol test which is required as part of the course. Failure of this test will lead to a learner being withdrawn from the course and issued a 5-year ban from the rail industry in line with industry protocol.
What are the course fees?
You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process.
To be eligible for a funded course you must be:
- In receipt of Universal Credit or earning less than £19,305 per year
- Aged 19 or over on 30th August 2022
(those aged 19-23 must have a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent) - A resident of Liverpool City Region
What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?
After successful completion of the full course, you will have the opportunity to gain primary sponsorship from an employing agency to allow you to work in the rail industry. Partner employers include Vital/Morson, McGinley and ISS Labour.
All learners who complete the course will be sponsored by a reputable rail employer who will offer them employment.

- If your employer is paying for your course, please bring a letter confirming this on company letterhead.
- Confirmation of your exam results or your qualification certificates.
- Your National Insurance number.
- Proof of identity, such as your passport or driving licence and proof of address, such as a recent utility bill.
- If you are not a UK or Irish Citizen living in the UK or Ireland for the past 3 years, please also bring along evidence of your residency status.
- If you are eligible for funding, please provide a wage slip (within 3 months of course start date) or an employment contract (stating annual, weekly or monthly gross wage).
