"Studying at St Helens College is the best decision that I have ever made in my life"


AshleighPublic and Uniformed Services student, Ashleigh, is making outstanding progress on her course, gaining impressive experience as a Merseyside Police Cadet and a Young Advisor for St Helens Council.

Ashleigh’s passion for helping and supporting others, has fuelled her determination to progress on to university to study a degree and achieve her ambition of a career in the Police force.

After completing her GCSEs at Rainford High School, Ashleigh joined the level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services, where she is currently in her final year and on target to achieve distinction grades which are equivalent to three grade As at A level.

Speaking about her time on the course, Ashleigh, from St Helens, said, “The course is really enjoyable because it’s very practical and varied meaning no two days are the same. They really put you through your paces physically and mentally, so that you feel prepared to enter the industry.”

She added, “Not only have I developed my confidence, discipline and fitness levels but I have had so many amazing opportunities to visit police stations and gain insight from fire and rescue service professionals and guest speakers from the armed forces.”

Using her knowledge and skills, Ashleigh has gained access to valuable opportunities to complement her studies. In her spare time, she is a Merseyside Police Cadet, working with a core team of Police Officers and staff to participate in training exercises and high profile events. She is also a Young Advisor for St Helens Council, ensuring that young people have a voice and an opportunity have a say on local issues that may affect them.

Lesley Wood, Public and Uniformed Services Tutor at St Helens College, commented on Ashleigh’s progress, saying, “Ashleigh has approached her studies with great enthusiasm and determination. Her ambition to succeed is clearly apparent both in and out of College. She is an honest, hardworking and conscientious student, showing willingness to learn and exceed.”

When reflecting on her experiences at St Helens College, Ashleigh, said, “I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have so far, if I had just continued on to sixth form. From work experience opportunities to the support and motivation from my tutors, I feel that I am one step closer to achieving my goal of a career in the Police force.”

As Ashleigh nears the end of her final year, she is busy preparing for her future after College, submitting applications to the Greater Manchester Police, The British Transport Police and her first choice university, Liverpool John Moores University.
