Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery (Adult Course)
This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.
This course introduces you to the carpentry and joinery work environment within the construction industry. You will learn how to use hand tools as well as portable power tools as you master the art of creating woodworking joints, frames, doors and windows.
You will learn about components and materials, the unloading and storage of timber and sheet materials, and how to put up access equipment and scaffolding.
When will I start the course and how long will it take?
The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend College three days per week, from 9.00am - 4.30pm.
The course takes place at St Helens College, STEM Centre Campus, St Helens WA9 1TT.
What will I study?
During this course, you will cover the following units:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
- Knowledge of construction technology
- Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
- Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery hand tools
- Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools
- Producing woodworking joints
How is it assessed?
During this course, you'll be assessed by a range of practical and online assessments.
Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?
You should have GCSEs at grade 3 or above in English and maths.
What are the course fees?

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?
This course is the first step towards becoming a successful Carpenter or Joiner. You could progress on to the level 2 Technical Certificate in Site Carpentry to enhance your skills and knowledge or alternatively, you could secure an apprenticeship to gain on-the-job skills and experience.
