Do you have a real interest and passion for caring for animals? This course is a great introduction to the industry.

Handling a variety of animals in our indoor and outdoor animal units, you will complete a range of activities such as preparing food and maintaining animal accommodation.

You will also have the opportunity to complete a work placement to gain valuable experience while developing your CV and interview skills.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

Course Units:

  • Prepare to work in the land-based industry
  • Assist with the care of animals
  • Animal health and wellbeing
  • Animals in the wild
  • Feeding and watering animals
  • Wildlife
  • Assist with the care of animals
  • Health and safety

Assessment methods – During your course, you will be assessed by a combination of workbook completion, practical observations, and two short, multiple-choice exams.

You should have two GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English and/or maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your course when you join us.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. Once you have completed this course, you may have the opportunity to progress on to a Level 2 Animal Care.

Alternatively, you could secure employment in a junior role within the industry.
