The HND Film and Television is designed for ambitious, imaginative learners who want to turn their passion for storytelling into a professional career. This qualification aims to develop students into confident, self reflective practitioners with the technical expertise, creative vision, and industry awareness needed to succeed in the fast moving global media landscape.

Throughout the programme, you’ll build a strong foundation in production techniques, creative development, project management, and collaborative working. You’ll learn how to respond to real world briefs, adapt to emerging technologies, and navigate the demands of contemporary film and television environments.

Whether you aspire to work behind the camera, lead creative teams, manage productions, or develop your own independent projects, this HND equips you with the practical skills, professional behaviours, and industry insight to progress into employment or further study.

The course will start in September and will take two years, full-time to complete. You will attend the College, three days per week.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

You should have achieved:

  • A relevant Level 3 qualification in Creative Media, Photography, Art or Film would be beneficial, however other subject areas, plus evidence of filmmaking practice will be considered.
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above (or Level 2 equivalent)
  • Successful interview and/or suitability assessment

YEAR ONE – Module A: Process & Practice | 120 Credits YEAR TWO – Module B: Professional Creative Practice | 120 Credits
A1: Concept & Development B1: Personal Professional Development
A2: Creative Project B2: Professional Project

Learning takes place through a blend of lectures, workshops, practical film and television practices.

Assessment is coursework-based and may include:

  • Work-based projects in film and television production
  • Professional reports
  • Reflective journals
  • Presentations
  • Case studies
  • Academic subject area research

There are no formal exams. All assessment is internally assessed and externally quality assured.

For 2027 entry, tuition fees for full-time study are £8,995 per year.

Additional Costs

Course-Related Travel (Placements/Work Experience/Voluntary/Site Visits There are opportunities for workshops, work experience, industry talks and visits throughout the course.
Equipment and Materials You may wish to use your own 4K film camera, but all students will have access to camera, lighting and editing equipment and software, including a TV studio, green screen and editing suites.
Trips The estimated cost for trips is £75 per year for travel and entry costs. The Estimated cost for optional international study visits is £300 (subject to student numbers) including an estimated £200 for spending money.
Volunteering Opportunities for Personal Development Learners are encouraged to engage in volunteering or extended professional practice to enhance leadership experience and employability.

On successful completion, learners may progress into roles such as:

  • Production Runner: Often the first step, assisting with various tasks on set, in production offices, or in post-production houses.
  • Camera/Lighting/Sound Trainee: Assisting camera operators, gaffers, or sound mixers.
  • Production Assistant (PA) or Coordinator: Supporting the production office with scheduling, logistics, and admin.
  • Art Department Trainee: Assisting with props, set decoration, or costume
  • Cinematographer: Director, Camera Operator or Producer

This HND also provides progression routes to many relevant film and television-related degrees including:

  • Film Making BA (Hons)
  • BA in Film, TV and Digital Production
  • Film and Broadcast Production BA (Hons)
  • Media Production BA (Hons)
  • Media and Television Production BA (Hons).
