This course is a great introduction to the automotive industry, where you will develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge to enable you to progress on to the next level of study.

Using a variety of tools and equipment in our Automotive Hub, you will discover how spark and compression ignition engines work, explore lubrication, steering, braking and suspensions while gaining an understanding of electrical systems.

More information

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Health and safety
  • Tools and equipment
  • Spark and compression ignition engines

An additional qualification will be offered as part of your course: personal and social development for the automotive industry.

You should have 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including English and/or maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please visit our dedicated Financial Support page.

Upon completion of this course, you could progress on to the level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance Repair.

Alternatively, you may choose to complete an apprenticeship to earn while you learn.
