More information

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

During this one-year course, you will gain an understanding of the various aspects of animal management through a number of units such as:

  • Maintaining animal health and welfare
  • Animal feeding and accommodation
  • Animal behaviour and handling
  • Working in the animal care industry
  • Health and safety for the land-based industries
  • Principles of animal biology

You will be assessed by a combination of controlled assessments, including exams, assignments and practical assessments.

You should have three GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and/or maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your course when you join us.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please visit our dedicated financial support page.

This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to gain employment within the industry. You’ll also have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills, preparing you for university or a higher level role in the industry, by progressing on to a level 3.

Former students who have completed this course have gone on to secure jobs in wildlife establishments, kennels, catteries, animal welfare organisations, charities and equine centres.
