Level 2 Certificate in Practical Animal Care Skills

This qualification develops learners’ practical animal care skills, embeds and promotes sound working practices, and provides essential animal industry knowledge to help learners to progress onto further learning or into employment in the land-based sector. Learning is delivered via theory based lessons as well as lots of practical sessions in our indoor and outdoor animal units, working with our large range or animals.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

Course Units:

  • Animal health and wellbeing
  • Health and safety
  • Prepare and maintain animal accommodation
  • Prepare and provide feed

During your course, you will be assessed by creating a portfolio of work, including written and poster work, as well as some practical observations.

You should have 3 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including English and/or maths.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to gain employment within the industry. You’ll also have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills, preparing you for university or a higher level role in the industry, by progressing on to a level 3.

Former students who have completed this course have gone on to secure jobs in wildlife establishments, kennels, catteries, animal welfare organisations, charities and equine centres.
