With this course, you will have an exciting opportunity to undertake a work placement to gain first-hand insight and experience of working in such an exciting industry.

Alongside this, you will explore everything from anatomy, physiology, dementia, nutrition and healthcare practice to social psychology, mental health and alcohol awareness.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

During this course, you will cover:

  • Healthcare practice
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care
  • Understanding dementia
  • The sociology of health
  • Nutrition
  • Social psychology
  • Equality and diversity
  • Understanding mental health

You will be assessed through written assignments, reports, presentations and leaflets or guides for workers in the sector.

You should have 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and/or maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your course when you join us.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2025), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. Once you have completed this course, you may choose to progress into employment and begin your career as a Health Care Assistant, Support Worker or a Personal Care Assistant.

Alternatively, you could advance your skills and knowledge by continuing on to the level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care or the level 3 Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care.
