During this course, you will explore all aspects of science in our laboratories, by conducting practical experiments and hypotheses, where you will investigate diseases, infections, chemical reactions and medical physics. You will also enhance your knowledge of scientific theory that will equip you for higher education and employment within the science sector.

This qualification is equivalent to three A levels, and carries UCAS points that are recognised by higher education providers for many relevant courses.

The course will start in September and take two years to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

The course consists of 13 modules, 7 mandatory, and 6 optional.

The mandatory modules are:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Applications
  • Principles and Applications of Science II
  • Investigative Project
  • Contemporary Issues in Science

The optional modules are:

  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
  • Disease and Infection
  • Applications of Organic Chemistry
  • Practical Chemical Analysis
  • Industrial Chemical Reactions
  • Applications of Medical Physics

Assessment is continuous throughout the course by a range of methods including assignments, evidence portfolios, projects, case studies, practical exercises and external tests and set tasks.

You should have 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. Upon successful completion of this course, you could accrue up to 168 UCAS Tariff Points to take you to university. You may choose to progress on to University Centre St Helens to study HNC Applied Chemistry.
