Animal Management

Level 3 Work-based Animal Care and Welfare

This course teaches you the essential skills and knowledge needed to work in Animal Management. You’ll learn how to care for animals, follow animal welfare guidelines, and develop strong teamwork and communication skills. Lessons include both classroom learning and lots of hands-on experience with a wide variety of animals in our indoor and outdoor facilities.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

Course Units:

  • Promote and maintain the health and wellbeing of animals
  • Handling and restraint of animals
  • Plan and provide feed and nutrition to animals
  • Maintain animal behaviour
  • Animal training
  • Health and safety

During your course, you will be assessed by creating a portfolio of work, including written work, practical observations, and formal assessments.

You should have 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English and maths.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. The Level 3 carries up to a maximum of 168 UCAS Tariff Points, and previous students have progressed on to university to study a variety of animal-related and science degrees such as zoology, zoo management, veterinary science and animal behaviour.
