Studying a T Level in Building Services Engineering for Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing (Mechanical Engineering) will prepare you for an exciting career within the industry.

Designed by employers, a T Level combines practical and theoretical learning with real-life industry experience. It also supports progression on to university, into employment or on to a higher/degree apprenticeship.

You’ll spend 80% of your time at College and 20% on a 45-day industry placement to experience having a real career while you continue your studies. It’ll also give you a head start in the jobs market and will look great on your CV or personal statement.

The course will start in September and will take two years to complete.

This course will take place at our The STEM Centre, Technology Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

Based in our purpose-built Centre for Precision Engineering Centre with support from expert tutors, you will cover the below content including completing a 45-day industry placement:

  • Working within the Engineering and Manufacturing Sectors – an understanding of how materials, conditions and context influence design processes and products
  • Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing – a knowledge and understanding of mathematics including standard matrices and determinants and standard trigonometry
  • Materials and their properties – understanding material processing techniques and their effects on materials and material quality, the condition of materials, how these are managed, and materials testing methods and techniques
  • Business, commercial and financial awareness – basic commercial principles including commercial priorities and markets, customers/clients/partners and resource allocation

The course is assessed by an externally set written exam, an employer set task and an externally assessed synoptic assessment that covers the occupational specialism.

You should have 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English language and science, and a grade 5 in maths.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2026), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. Having achieved the equivalent to three A levels, you could progress on to university, a higher/degree apprenticeship, or employment.
