The Work Skills – Employability Pathway programme is designed to support students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to enable them to progress into employment or progress to a higher level course.

Tutors will work with the students to help develop their transferable skills such as problem solving, communication, and teamwork, participating in mock interviews, CV sessions, and attending industry guest speaker talks. Alongside this, they will complete further learning and employment qualifications including English and maths.

During their time on the course, students will also have the opportunity to attend ‘vocational tasters’ within other areas of the College to prepare them for future study and work experience opportunities.

Each student will have a personal tutor with specialist SEND knowledge who is responsible for all aspects of their study programme and will support them to make progress towards outcomes through an individualised approach. The Pathway is delivered over one academic year, and will follow a personalised programme of study to support their EHCP outcomes and their end goals.

The pathway intentions are for students to:

  • Be able to make an informed choice about their future opportunities
  • Develop transferable skills for the workplace including teamwork, communication, and independence
  • Have the opportunity to participate in internal or external work placements, job shadowing, or vocational tasters

Built on a mixture of theory and portfolio development, the pathway includes:

  • Open Awards Skills for Further Learning and Employment to support future career options at Entry 3 and Level 1
  • RARPA framework to support EHCP outcomes and personal development
  • English and maths qualifications
  • Internal or external work experience opportunities
  • Tutorial sessions
  • PSHE
