Knowsley Community College partners with Knowsley Council to expand training opportunities in Kirkby

Tutor With Group Of Mature College Students Working In LibraryKnowsley Community College has joined forces with Knowsley Council to enhance its presence and broaden its educational offerings in Kirkby. This collaboration aims to make learning more accessible by delivering a wide range of training opportunities across multiple community locations.

The initiative will see the College working closely with the Council’s Family and Community Education (FACE) service to provide courses at Southdene Community Centre, Broad Lane, and Centre 63 on Old Hall Lane.

These courses, which are free to attend, cover essential skills such as English, maths, digital literacy, and employability, as well as bespoke training tailored to individual needs.

A comprehensive offer for all learners

The courses offered are designed to cater to a diverse range of learners, providing them with essential skills for personal and professional development. Courses include:

English and Maths

These courses aim to build confidence, enhance career prospects, and support students to develop the skills to manage everyday tasks such as helping children with homework or household budgeting. Courses are available from entry-level to Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs).

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

These courses support individuals whose first language is not English, focusing on improving reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. ESOL also provides pathways to further education.

Digital Skills

Designed to develop digital skills for everyday use, work, or further study, these courses cater to beginners to advanced levels.

Employability Courses

These programmes, tailored to build workplace skills and confidence, cover areas such as care work, customer service, business administration, warehousing, hospitality, and retail.

Bespoke Training

These courses are tailored to meet individual needs with the aim of preparing to enter the workplace.

Simon Pierce, CEO and Principal at Knowsley Community College, emphasised the importance of bringing education into the community:

“We are excited to offer a range of courses in the heart of our local community, to widen access to learning opportunities and support residents with the development of essential skills for everyday life, education, and employment. Our curriculum teams are looking forward to being out in the community from September.”

Cllr David Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the value of this partnership:

“I’m delighted to be working with Knowsley Community College on bringing their offer into the community, making learning and development opportunities more accessible to more people. It’s essential that our residents and learners from outside the borough can access the learning and development opportunities they need to achieve and succeed.”
