Highlights: November

University Centre St Helens had the privilege of recognising the incredible achievements of their graduates at the recent Graduation Ceremony, held at St Helens Parish Church.

Joined by friends, family, academic staff and this year’s Honoured Guest, global Third Sector Advisor and explorer, Bernie Hollywood OBE JP, our graduates braved Storm Bert, not allowing the gloomy weather to dampen their celebrations.

After processing through Church Square Shopping Centre, led by the Town Crier, Parr Band and Valley Brass Band to the church, CEO and Principal, Simon Pierce, opened proceedings with his address, before welcoming Bernie Hollywood OBE JP to the pulpit.

Bernie, who has raised millions of pounds for UK and overseas charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises, is not only an ambassador for various charities including Save the Children UK but is also an international advisor and remarkable storyteller, having spoken at the United Nations, various worldwide Governments, and TED Talks, to name a few.

As an accomplished explorer and adventurer, Bernie has rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean, climbed some of the world’s highest mountains, trekked unsupported through deserts and cycled across continents.

Each year, special awards are gifted to graduating students, who have demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination to succeed in their studies.

This year’s Brian Dean Award, in honour of former and much-loved Deputy Principal and colleague, Brian Dean, was presented to graduate, Janet McMullen. From having no formal qualifications to graduating with a degree in Microbiology, Janet has shown unwavering commitment to her educational journey despite the daily challenges of balancing family life, work and study.

The St Helens Rotary Club Award was presented to Media Production graduate, Matthew O’Brien. After overcoming several challenging circumstances, including significant financial hardships whilst also contending with both his mental and physical health, Matthew continued to produce work of exceptional quality, which has led him to achieving the highest Foundation Degree award of Distinction.

The Microbiology Award was presented to graduate, Dominic Stuart. Dominic’s path to microbiology has not always been a linear journey, and it has taken him completing an engineering apprenticeship and then an Access to Higher Education Health Professionals course, to realise his dreams of becoming a Microbiologist. He is proof that perseverance pays off.

Another special touch of the day included graduates receiving a limited edition print by talented artist and our Higher Education Quality Manager, Neil Moran. He said the piece was inspired by guest speaker Bernie Hollywood OBE JP and “the imagery of people gathering around the Earth to protect it reflects his ‘People’ and ‘Planet’ strategies, driving change for the better for everyone whilst protecting the world and its resources.” 

The special day ended with graduates, families, friends, and academic staff enjoying a canapé reception, served by St Helens College’s catering and hospitality students, whilst being serenaded by talented saxophonist, Sophia Sax.
